FOR FOREIGN RESIDENTS · REVIEWED 2 SEPTEMBER 2026
Three useful cards. No approval promises.
Japanese card issuers do not publish approval rates by nationality. We therefore compare practical evidence—residence-card handling, application route, everyday usefulness and repayment controls—not unverified approval-rate claims.
Affiliate-link rule
The three comparison cards below use official information links. Separate EPOS and Nudge placements are marked PR / Affiliate because those links are approved for this exact JRG media registration. Sponsored placement does not change the editorial comparison.
Choose the card that matches your actual spending.
All three require screening. Residence-card support is evidence that foreign residents can complete identity procedures; it is not evidence of a higher approval rate.

Rakuten Card
Best for broad everyday use and people who already use Rakuten services
Why it is practical
The standard card has no annual fee, earns Rakuten Points on eligible spending, and the issuer’s identity procedures accept a valid residence card. Rakuten also publishes application guidance for international students.
Prepare before applying
Japanese home address, reachable phone number and email, a Japanese withdrawal account, and consistent name and address data. Follow any additional identity-document request.
Watch carefully
Point rates vary by transaction and campaign. Cash advances, installments and revolving payment can add costs. Screening is independent from Rakuten Bank account opening.
Best for frequent PayPay users who want app-based payment and statement control
Why it is practical
The standard card has no annual fee and earns PayPay Points under the current benefit rules. Applications require residence in Japan, an eligible age and income situation, and a mobile phone that can be used for identity verification.
Prepare before applying
A stable Japanese address and mobile number, exact name data, and a bank account for payment. Foreign residents should be ready to submit and later update residence-card information when requested.
Watch carefully
PayPay Card and PayPay Bank are different contracts with separate screening. PayPay benefits have conditions, exclusions and possible changes; verify the final application screen.
Best for people who value a physical support counter and residence-card handling
Why it is practical
The standard card has no annual fee. At eligible Marui locations, applicants may complete identity confirmation and, if approved, receive a card at the counter; a residence card is among the accepted documents.
Prepare before applying
A Japanese residential address and contact details, valid residence card, and the bank-account information requested for monthly payment. Store issuance is still subject to screening and operating hours.
Watch carefully
The basic point return is lower than some 1% cards on ordinary spending. Foreign residents must respond to later residence-period confirmation requests, or card use may be restricted.

EPOS Card application
EPOS appears in the editorial comparison because of its officially documented application and identity-check routes. The approved advertisement here is a separate, tracked way to open the application.
Approval is never guaranteed.
Confirm the latest eligibility, fees, benefits, identity documents and card-delivery route on the application screen. EPOS alone decides the screening result and card limit.
Japan Resident Guide may receive a commission after an eligible completed application. The advertisement is supplied through A8.net and does not change the editorial order above.

Nudge Visa card
Nudge accepts applications from age 18 through its app and is positioned as a first-card option. Application and continued use are subject to Nudge's screening and current terms.
Check identity-document eligibility before applying.
The age rule alone does not establish eligibility for a foreign resident. Confirm the currently accepted ID, residence requirements, fees, repayment method and final conditions in the app. Japan Resident Guide does not promise approval.

BEFORE YOU APPLY
Make the application easy to verify.
A clean, consistent application is more useful than sending several applications at once.
Wait for a stable addressThe delivery address and identity-document address must match the issuer’s rules. Apply after moving and completing applicable address updates.
Use your legal name consistentlyCopy the residence-card spelling and follow the issuer’s rules for middle names, spaces and character limits.
Prepare a Japanese phone and withdrawal accountKeep both usable through application, delivery and monthly payment. The issuer may require additional documents.
Describe work, study and income accuratelyNever invent employment or income. Students and family members should use the route that matches their real status.
Avoid simultaneous applicationsApply for the one card that best fits your situation, wait for the result, and keep a debit or prepaid backup.
Choose one-time payment by defaultCheck every statement and disable automatic revolving payment unless you knowingly want it and understand the fees.
PAYMENT SAFETY
Points are small. Interest and late payment are not.
Pay the full billed amount by the due date whenever possible. “One-time payment” at the shop may not undo an automatic revolving setting already attached to the account.
